Homeopathy explained

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a 250 year old system of medicine and is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world according to the WHO (World Health Organisation). It works using the principle of ‘like cures like’, for example, if drinking too much coffee keeps you awake, then homeopathically prepared coffee (coffea crudum) is one of the remedies that will relieve you of sleeplessness. If ingesting arsenic causes anxiety, fear of death, nausea, lack of appetite, and vomiting, then arsenicum album prepared homeopathically, may be the remedy selected by your homeopath for a client who presents with anxiety, nausea, vomiting and fear of dying.

How are homeopathic remedies made?

Each homeopathic remedy has been prepared using internationally defined standards of preparation. Remedies are made from minerals, plants and sometimes human or animal discharges (e.g. from a sample of milk). Each substance that a remedy is made from, is first diluted (1 part substance to 9 or 99 parts alcohol), then succussed (shaken vigorously 20 times), then diluted (using 1 part of the previous dilution to 9 or 99 parts of alcohol) and succussed (20 times), then do this over and over until the desired potency has been achieved. Once a remedy is made into a potency, it is then taken (ingested) by a group of “provers” in a controlled setting for a number of weeks.

How are different potencies produced?

The most common potencies are made using the dilution method of 1 part of substance to 99 parts of alcohol. This dilution/succession method results in the CM remedies – e.g. 6C 12C 30C 200C and 1M. The 1M has been diluted and succussed 1000 times. This is considered a high potency. The 6, 12 and 30C remedies are considered to be low potencies.

How do homeopathic remedies work?

As we are just beginning to understand, everything is frequency. Each homeopathic remedy has its own frequency. When the frequency of the remedy is similar to the frequency that a sick person is emanating, then the similar remedy will alert the sick person’s energy field to make adjustments and restore the energy field back to balance. A balanced energy field is called homeostasis.
